Working Group Chemical Physics

Head: Prof. Dr. Manfred Kappes

Up until very recently, elemental carbon was only known in the form of graphite or diamond. The discovery of fullerenes, cage-like carbon molecules, in 1985, of carbon nanotubes in 1991, and of graphene, an atomic monolayer of graphite, in 2004 introduced new carbon structures where the atomic dimensions lead to distinguished quantum effects in their electronic behavior.

Our research activites are concentrated on the synthesis and optimization of these materials, in particular with respect to quantum optics applications, in close collaboration with the physics working groups of our IQMT division.
